International Workshop on Renewable Energy Development in Macaronesia and West Africa

The ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, in collaboration with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the General Directorate for Energy of Cabo Verde (DGE) organized the International Workshop on Renewable Energy Development in Macaronesia and West Africa, which took place at the Centre for Renewable Energy and Industrial Maintenance (CERMI), Praia, Cabo Verde on May 30 – 31.

The event brought together up to 80 public and private sector participants from Cabo Verde, the other archipelagos of Macaronesia, selected ECOWAS Member States as well as international institutions, including AFD, GIZ, ECREEE, EU, IRENA, JICA, Luxembourg Development Cooperation, UNIDO and the World Bank. The participants are decision makers and technical experts from utilities, ministries, regulatory agencies, project developers and scientists.

The objectives of the International Workshop on Renewable Energy Development were to:

  • Exchange of experiences and information on past, ongoing and planned activities for improving the frame conditions for RE development in Cabo Verde and other countries;
  • Present and discuss innovative solutions for generation and storage of electricity from renewable sources;
  • Establish a networking opportunities for public and private stakeholders who are promoting renewable energy development.

In this sense, the atelier aimed at accelerating the uptake of clean and cost-effective renewable energy technologies on islands as well as other countries with similar conditions, strengthening the knowledge base on RE-related topics. The event will focused on the challenges associated with a high penetration of renewable energy in the electricity grid, and how they could be addressed.
