United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO)

UNIDO is the United Nations’ specialized agency with the mandate to promote industrial development in the world’s developing and least developed nations and is one of the leading agencies in the field of energy access, renewable energy and industrial energy efficiency.

UNIDO coordinates the energy component of the GEF Strategic Programme for West Africa (SPWA) – Energy Access. UNIDO has provided technical assistance for the establishment and operation of the Regional Centre for Small Hydropower, based in Abuja, Nigeria and for the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE).

They also fulfil an important role in the Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) Initiative

Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID)

AECID is the main management body for Spanish cooperation, which combats poverty and works for sustainable human development. Since 2010 AECID has supported ECREEE by providing core funding and secondment of a Technical Assistant.

The Global Environment Facility (GEF)

GEF unites 182 countries in partnership with international institutions, civil society organizations (CSOs), and the private sector to address global environmental issues while supporting national sustainable development initiatives. 

Since 1991, the GEF has achieved a strong track record with developing countries and countries with economies in transition, providing $10.5 billion in grants and leveraging $51 billion in co-financing for over 2,700 projects in over 165 countries.

Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH

GIZ is world’s leading provider of international cooperation services for sustainable development. GIZ's support to ECREEE aims to improve the preconditions for the use of RE in the power pool by:

  • Support of selected countries in implementing EREP.
  • Dissemination of experiences with national RE-policies.
  • Preparation of specific RE projects for power generation

European Union

The European Union supported the development of the ECOWAS Renewable Energy Policy through the RECP Program and the ECOWAS Energy Efficiency Policy through the Energy Facility project “Supporting Energy Efficiency for Access in West Africa (SEEA-WA.

The development of the Action plans are also supported by the EU.

Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC)

Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC) supports countries in Africa, Asia, South Eastern and Eastern Europe as well as the Caribbean in their sustainable development. 

The Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC) supported the establishment of ECREEE since its beginning with the creation of a Secretariat in Cape Verde and a network of National Focal Institutions in all 15 ECOWAS member states.

France

France encourages the mobilization of private funding alongside traditional aid, innovative mechanisms such as the European Union's energy facility, and finally global coordination around the Sustainable Energy For All Initiative (SE4All), launched by UN Secretary-General Ban-Ki Moon in 2012. France is the second European contributor to SE4All. Expertise France is the French agency for international technical cooperation that through MAEDI financing, is seconding a French expert working as SE4ALL coordinator for ECREEE.
